Here is a little trivia, the Redfish is not only NC’s state fish, the World Record for this species was caught in the surf somewhere near Avon, NC by David Deul on November 7, 1984, it’s IGFA recognized weight was 94lbs and 2ozs. We catch redfish pretty much year round and they can be found up and down the East coast and throughout the Gulf from the Florida Keys to Texas.
There a three main rivers in NC where strippers can be caught. Although stripers can be caught year round the prime seasons are typically from late November thru early May.
North Carolina has one of the best flounder fisheries anywhere. In recent years NCMF has set a recreational season for this fish because of being over fished but from all indications this species seems to be making a great come back. The remain fairly easy and readily caught all year. Keep in mind, this species is kept only within it’s season and writhing it’s length requirements.
Never eliminate our area’s panfish such as Spots, Croaker, Pigfish and Sea Mulllet. These fish make excellent table fare.
